Read-Only Friday
My company for the most part observes “Read-Only Friday”. This is the practice of not making any changes on Friday unless absolutely necessary. This avoids having those Monday morning emergencies in case something goes wrong with any of the changes affected that previous Friday.
At first glance, this may seem like something that is done for our own quality of life. It is, but it also has a lot of other benefits for your company:
- The team is at it’s weakest on Friday
- Engineers become more tired as the weekend nears.
- More likely to be missing employees on Friday, especially in the afternoon.
- Less Visibility
- Other teams operate at less capacity during this time as well, so issues are less likely to be identified or even reported.
Not only are there a lot of benefits to the organization, let’s not forget that having happier, well-rested engineers equates to better performance at their job and it also makes them more likely to stay at your company. I recommend you consider Read-Only Fridays as well.
